Mechanism of Action
Teduglutide is a 33-amino acid analog of glucagon-like peptide-2 with one amino acid substitution that resists breakdown by DPP-4. Activating GLP-2 receptors increases intestinal villus height and crypt depth, improves blood flow to the gut and slows gastric emptying, which together increase absorption.
Typical Dosage (Research)
Prescription-only medicine. Dosing is set by a physician according to the FDA-approved label and the condition being treated.
Side Effects & Risks
Abdominal pain, injection site reactions, nausea, headache, abdominal distension and upper respiratory infections.
Can accelerate the growth of existing colorectal polyps or tumors, so colonoscopy is required before and during treatment. Risks include intestinal obstruction, gallbladder and pancreatic disease, and fluid overload.
Who Uses Teduglutide
Adults and children 1 year and older with short bowel syndrome who need parenteral support.
