Mechanism of Action
Romiplostim is a 'peptibody': peptides that activate the thrombopoietin receptor fused to an antibody fragment that extends its half-life. Activating the receptor stimulates bone marrow megakaryocytes to make more platelets.
Typical Dosage (Research)
Prescription-only medicine. Dosing is set by a physician according to the FDA-approved label and the condition being treated.
Side Effects & Risks
Joint and muscle pain, headache, dizziness, insomnia and abdominal pain.
Increased bone marrow fibers (reticulin), blood clots if platelets rise too high, and rebound low platelets after stopping.
Who Uses Romiplostim
Adults and children with chronic ITP who have not responded well to other treatments; also approved for radiation-induced bone marrow injury.
