Mechanism of Action
Two changes to the vasopressin structure make desmopressin longer-acting and selective for V2 receptors. In the kidney this increases water reabsorption; in blood vessels it releases stored von Willebrand factor and factor VIII, improving clotting.
Typical Dosage (Research)
Prescription-only medicine. Dosing is set by a physician according to the FDA-approved label and the condition being treated.
Side Effects & Risks
Headache, flushing, nausea and abdominal cramps.
Hyponatremia (low sodium) from water retention, which can cause seizures. Fluid intake must be limited around doses. The nasal form for bedwetting carries a boxed warning for hyponatremia.
Who Uses Desmopressin
People with central diabetes insipidus, children with bedwetting, and patients with mild hemophilia A or von Willebrand disease.
